Digital/Analog Board Designer

The Senior Digital-Analog Board Designer will report to a unit lead and be responsible for the design of CPU boards, digital control/processing boards, motor drive boards, data sampling and/or pattern generation boards for space applications. These boards will include FPGAs, occasionally CPUs and various serial or parallel interfaces. The applications can be in the area of space robotics, telecommunication (including satellite constellations), radar imaging, CPU boards, etc.

Top Desired Technical Skills:
1) Must possess high speed board design experience (Mentor Xpedition ideal, but not necessary)
2) Experience with High speed DA or AD conversion, OR experience designing with large motherboards OR general CPU design
3) Experience from military background, and ruggedization would be ideal

Overview:
  • Convert board level requirements into a board design concept
  • Architecture, I/Os, key parts, dissipation estimate, etc
  • Prepare an electrical schematic, a list of parts and initial part layout placement
  • Plan board routing and provide routing requirements and constraints
  • Supervise board layout and review board gerbers, board & assembly drawings
  • Work with structural & thermal designers for the board design and layout
  • Prepare various analyses (ex: worst case, FMECA)
  • Support board assembly and conduct tests on initial models (ex: breadboard)
  • Prepare functional and environmental test plans & procedures for flight models
  • Supervise tests on the flight boards in clean laboratories
  • Support VHDL developers that program on-board FPGAs, software developers for CPU boards and electrical ground test equipment designers
  • Report progress and issues to the program lead
Requirements:
  • Eight (8) to twenty (20) years of experience designing CPU, digital or analog boards
  • Proficient with a schematic entry tool (ex: Mentor Xpedition, PADS)
  • Regular user of Excel spreadsheets, MathCAD, Spice, Matlab or other such tools
  • Knowledgeable about bare board manufacturing processes
  • Experience in conducting analyses
  • Knowledgeable about part types
  • At ease and efficient in a lab environment
  • Strong inter-personal skills and an ability to work well in a team
  • Ability to manage sub-ordinates
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English and French
 Background:
  • Knowledge of ruggedized designs
  • Knowledge of space radiation effects on parts
  • Exposure to mechanical packaging
  • Experience with high-speed digital designs and layout an asset
