We’ve partnered with an emerging Ventures company backed by one of Canada’s leading financial institutions to assist in the search for an experience software engineering manager to join their team as they enter the next phase of their explosive growth.   Our client has developed an all-in-one platform designed to help Canadian entrepreneurs to start, manage and grow their businesses through the automation of business formation and everyday legal work.  With 71% company growth over the past 12 months, they’re ready to take their engineering team to the next level. 
This is a great opportunity for a technically savvy player-coach that is looking for a new leadership role in a high-growth environment without the financial instability of most start-up ventures. 
As a Software Engineering Manager, you’ll be focused on leading a team to develop the next evolution of our client’s platform working alongside engineers, product managers and designers.  Your experience will help set the technical direction of the applications, infrastructure, and pipeline.  As a manager, you’ll have daily opportunities to lead and mentor other developers as you tackle challenging technical problems in an agile team setting.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Manage teams of skilled JavaScript developers who work on a rapidly evolving consumer-facing platform, and take responsibility for their mentorship and growth.
  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on contribution of the software that supports the business and for monitoring and maintaining that software in production.
  • Co-ordinate delivery of major product milestones and manage stakeholders
  • Establish the patterns, architecture, and practices that the team will follow in building modern and best-in-class software.
  • Be responsible for finding opportunities to iteratively improve technology and delivery processes.
About you
  • You embrace an owner's mindset: continually striving to make an impact; investing time, energy, and capital as if they were your own; and understanding that no part of the business is outside the scope of your position.
  • You have significant production JavaScript experience, and have formed clear opinions about how different development patterns and practices can both negatively and positively impact your ability to be productive in a codebase, and by extension, the reliability of a business' software platform.
  • You innately understand web/application security and the importance of data privacy.
  • You keep yourself up to date on the latest trends in the ever-changing open-source development space and understand where they should (or shouldn't) be applied in the team's context.
  • You behave proactively when confronted with unforeseen challenges and complexity in your projects. Your team members can clearly understand the state of your work, your delivery plans, and your ideas for improving the business' software, technology processes, and team culture.
Requirements:
  • 4+ years of solid hands-on programming experience, with a sizable portion in JavaScript, TypeScript, GraphQL, React, and Postgres.
  • 2+ years of leading, managing, and mentoring technical teams.
  • Experience planning, documenting, implementing, and maintaining scaled web applications.
  • Experience working with and setting up modern software development best practices (source control, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, declarative infrastructure, etc).
  • Experience building production systems, with an understanding of the deployment, monitoring, and security best practices required to run production software.
